Eating with Braces

After the placement of braces or an orthodontic appointment, your teeth will be tender for a few days. This may make eating uncomfortable. At your appliance placement appointment we will give you a pamphlet with diet ideas to help you through this ‘tender tooth’ phase. Throughout you orthodontic journey, plan your meals and snacks with braces in mind.

If you think chewing will be a problem, you will find biting even more difficult. Solution? Don’t bite! You will find it safer and more comfortable to let your knife and fork do the biting for you.

It helps to avoid foods that are sticky, chewy, hard and crunchy. Other hints include:

  • Do not chew on ice, pens or pencils.
  • Cut up apples, carrots, and other raw vegetables.
  • Avoid chewy and tough meats including beefy jerky.
  • Popcorn, nuts, bagels and hard chips can break off brackets.
  • Sugary or carbonated sodas are to be avoided.

Please be smart about your food selection. Loose, broken or bent appliances prolong your treatment.
